Brian Flynn was manager for the opening Group 3 fixture against Andorra 11 years ago and it took an own goal Armand Fajardo midway through the opening half for Cymru to register three points in the 1-0 win. However, the side could only claim a further seven points during the course of the campaign and finished one place off the bottom of the group.

Geraint Williams had taken charge of the side by the time the qualifier against Romania on this day in 2016 came around and his side were in serious qualifying contention as they went into the second half of the campaign. Having drawn 0-0 away to Bulgaria a few days before, Cymru headed to Medias for a important match against the home side, but goals from Robert Hodorogea and Alexandru Ioniță before the hour mark left them with everything to do. A goal from substitute Jake Charles in injury-time proved to be nothing but a consolation for the visitors after Ellis Harrison had seen his penalty saved before half-time.
"It was very, very frustrating," explained Williams to FAW.cymru after the match. "We let our standards drop tonight both with and without the ball and we came away with nothing, which is about what we deserved on tonight's performance. The penalty would certainly have been a turning point as we would have gone in at half-time level having not played well. We were undefeated before tonight by doing the basics well, so there are no excuses."
