CYMRU U21 v BULGARIA U21

Cymru and Bulgaria were also drawn together in qualifying for the 2017 UEFA U21 Championships and it was Geraint Williams' side that claimed four points against their opponents.

However, it was Bulgaria that would finish in second place in Group 5 behind Denmark as Cymru ended the campaign with just one victory in their last six games despite leading the group in the early stages.

The first match of the campaign took place at the Cardiff City Stadium in March 2015 as two goals from Tom O'Sullivan and a third from Josh Yorwerth inside the opening 25 minutes handed Cymru an impressive lead at half-time. However, Bulgaria regrouped and responded in the 2nd half and pulled a goal a goal back through Nikola Kolev after 51 minutes. Although their confidence was lifted after a frustrating opening half, Cymru comfortably held onto their lead.

With further victories over Luxembourg and Armenia and draws against Denmark and Romania, Cymru headed to Stara Zagora in March 2016 to take on Bulgaria as undefeated group leaders. An excellent performance at the Beroe Stadium deserved more than the eventual 0-0 draw, but it maintained their undefeated start to the campaign even if Williams and his players were left frustrated at the final whistle by what might have been. However, a subsequent poor run of form meant that Cymru would eventually finish the group in fourth place ahead of Luxembourg and Armenia.
